Day 34 - Aroma

    02.10.18 | by 40 Day Team

Pray: “Lord, there’s nothing like the smell of homemade bread or fresh brewed coffee or a field of spring violets or a newly cut Christmas tree—or dead fish or raw sewage or rotting garbage. Our nose so clearly tells our brain ‘I love this!’ or ‘Get me away from that!’ You gave us these senses, so Lord, awaken our senses. Help us be fully present and able to follow you wherever you lead.”

    Round 1
Isaiah 55:10-11 and 2 Corinthians 2:14-17 out loud

    Round 2
Who refreshes your soul and gives off the aroma of Jesus? (i.e. whenever you’re around this person, you just sense the presence of God and walk away stronger than when you first met.) Write down the qualities this person has that mirror Jesus. Do you refresh others? Do you smell like Jesus? If you think you do, write down a few ways that people are refreshed by you and see Jesus in you. If you’re not so sure, write down a few ways that you could refresh others.

    Round 3
Grab a cup of hot cocoa/coffee/tea and as you inhale that aroma, watch this video and read this article on Bill Gates’ latrine perfume. Say what? No, seriously, it’s an awesome quick read and relevant here. As you read, think about the ways that our world stinks really, really badly, like a Third World latrine. Then imagine a world where the sweet fragrance of Jesus comes in and fills up our senses so that the stink disappears. Pray: “God, show me someone who needs to be refreshed and help me make it happen.”

    Burn Out
When God brings someone to mind, make a plan to smell like Jesus and bring this person an aromatic gift this week: a fresh cup of coffee, a small bouquet of flowers, a plate of just-baked brownies…you get the idea. Add a note or tell the person, “Hey, I just wanted to put a smile on your face today.” If the person questions your motives, remember to speak boldly and just tell him/her, “This is what Jesus does so it’s what I try to do too.” or “I’m just trying to smell like Jesus.” You might get a weird look or you might get an open door to further conversation – maybe even share the 2 Corinthians passage. Pray that God will give you the words. Get after it!
